Binomial Nomenclature

The formal system of naming species using two Latin words: the genus name (capitalized) and the specific epithet (lowercase). Both are italicized. Developed by Carl Linnaeus in the 18th century. Example: Monstera deliciosa for the Swiss Cheese Plant.
